FAQ & Contact FAQ & CONTACT FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions We have compiled frequently asked questions to ensure a smooth and worry-free experience, even for first-time ferry travelers.

Baggage, Vehicles Pets

Q.1 Are there limits on carry-on luggage? View answer Close
You can bring up to 2 carry-on items per person; please check any additional items as registered baggage.

As a guide, you can bring up to 2 carry-on items (suitcases, etc.) per person into the cabin (max 30kg total weight and max 2m total dimensions per item). Please check any luggage exceeding these limits at the port counter as registered baggage. For safety reasons, large items that obstruct boarding or disembarking cannot be brought into the cabin.

Q.2 Do I need to reserve checked baggage? View answer Close
You can declare it at the counter on the day.
Advance reservation for checked baggage (luggage checked at the port) is not required. If you inform us at the boarding counter on the day of departure, we will process your baggage check-in on the spot. You can check up to 2 pieces of baggage per person (total dimensions within 2m for 3 sides, weight within 30kg per piece), but depending on the situation, we may accommodate requests for more than 2 pieces. We cannot accept valuables, fragile items, or items with strong odors, so please carry them with you.
Q.3 Can I bring a folding bike on board as carry-on baggage? View answer Close
If it’s in a bike travel bag, you can bring it on for free.

For folding bikes: if it’s folded compactly and stored in a dedicated bike travel bag, it’s treated as a carry-on item and you can bring it into the passenger cabin for free. If it’s only folded and not in a bag, the designated baggage fee will apply.

Depending on the cabin, you may not be able to bring it in. Staff may ask you to place it in a location they will show you.

A regular bike that doesn’t fold at all is treated as special baggage (shipped cargo) and requires a separate special baggage fee.

Q.4 How do I bring my car on board? View answer Close
You'll need a reservation for your car, and please complete the check-in process well before departure.

If you're bringing a vehicle, you need to make a reservation in advance. Please have your vehicle inspection certificate ready when booking (for driver-accompanied vehicles). On the day of departure, complete your vehicle check-in at Kagoshima New Port at least 2–3 hours before departure (times vary by company, so please check). At other ports, check-in is required at least 1 hour before departure. You must present your vehicle inspection certificate at the counter. If your vehicle's length or width exceeds standard limits due to cargo, extra fees will apply. Note that the vehicle freight rate includes 2nd-class passage for one driver. For shipping unaccompanied vehicles, please contact the cargo department directly.

Q.5 Can I bring a motorcycle or bicycle on board? View answer Close
Motorcycles and bicycles are handled as special baggage.

You can bring motorcycles and bicycles on the ship. These are generally treated as special baggage, and a prescribed fare will be charged separately from your passenger ticket.

Advance reservations are required for motorcycles and bicycles. Please provide the model name, engine displacement, and license plate number when booking. For the Kagoshima – Amami Islands – Okinawa route (departing from Kagoshima New Port), check-in is from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM on the day of departure. Please note that sidecars and trikes are treated as automobiles rather than motorcycles.

For the Kagoshima – Kikai – China route (departing from Kagoshima Main Port North Pier), please check in between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM on the day of departure.

Q.6 Can I return to my car after departure? View answer Close
Access to the vehicle deck is not permitted during the voyage.

Access to the vehicle deck is not permitted after departure. You will not be able to return to your car until arrival at the destination port, so please make sure you don't leave anything behind in your vehicle before boarding. Please bring any luggage you need to the passenger area beforehand.

Q.7 Can I bring my pet on board? View answer Close
Small pets are allowed in cages and must stay in the onboard pet room. They are not permitted in passenger cabins.

You can bring small pets like birds, cats, and small dogs on board if you provide your own cage or pet carrier. On the day of travel, you'll need to use the paid pet room and leave your pet inside their cage. Cages must be no larger than 2m in total dimensions (length + width + height), weigh no more than 30kg, and are limited to two per person. Large dogs or pets exceeding these sizes are handled as cargo; please contact the ferry company in advance for cargo rates and regulations. Regardless of your ticket class, pets are not allowed in passenger cabins (excluding service dogs such as guide, mobility, or hearing dogs).

Q.8 How much does it cost to bring a pet on board? View answer Close
The pet room fee varies depending on your route.
If you’re traveling with a pet, you’ll be charged a pet room fee based on your route. As a guide, it’s ¥1,570 per cage for routes between Kagoshima and each island/Okinawa, and ¥1,050 per cage for travel within the Amami Islands and between Amami and Okinawa (please prepare your own cage/container). Fees vary by route, so please check each company’s website for details.
Q.9 Where are pets kept on board? View answer Close
You'll use our dedicated pet room.
Pets must stay in the onboard pet room, and you'll be responsible for their care. Pets aren't allowed in cabins, on decks, or in any other public areas (this applies to all cabin classes, with the exception of certified service dogs such as guide dogs or hearing dogs).
Q.10 Can I go check on my pet? View answer Close
You can enter and leave the pet room at any time during the voyage.

You're free to enter and leave the pet room during the voyage. You can take care of your pet, such as giving them water or cleaning up after them. However, please note that you cannot take your pet out of the pet room (to cabins or decks). Please be mindful of your pet's barking and physical condition. We take no responsibility for the life or death of your pet.

Q.11 Can I leave my pet in the car? View answer Close
You can leave them in the car, but at your own risk.

If you're boarding with a vehicle, you can leave your pet in the car. However, you won't be able to access the vehicle deck during the voyage, so you won't be able to check on your pet until arrival at your destination. Additionally, you cannot leave your car windows open during the voyage.

The ferry company cannot be held responsible for anything that may happen to your pet during the voyage, so this option is only recommended if you're confident in your pet's health management and is at your own risk.

Q.1 Does the ship rock? Do you sell motion sickness medicine? View answer Close
We use anti-vibration devices to reduce rocking. If you're worried, we recommend taking motion sickness medicine.
The ferry is equipped with fin stabilizers to reduce rolling, so you won't feel much movement in normal weather. However, it can rock when sea conditions are poor or in areas with high waves. If you're worried about seasickness, please take motion sickness medicine in advance. Some ferries sell medicine at the onboard shop, but supplies are limited. We recommend preparing your own before boarding just in case.
Q.2 Is it safe for women traveling alone? View answer Close

To ensure women travelers can rest comfortably, we provide women-only cabins on Kagoshima routes only. Women-only cabins are available in 2nd class berths and 2nd class Western-style rooms, making them perfect for solo female travelers or women traveling together. Please note that boys under elementary school age may accompany women in these cabins.

Q.5 I can’t get through on the phone to make a reservation—what should I do? View answer Close
During peak periods, phone lines get busy, so you may have to wait.

During peak periods—like summer vacation, Obon, and the New Year holidays—especially on the day reservations open, the reservation center phone lines get extremely busy. We’re sorry if you can’t get through, but please stay on the line or call back later. Some sailings can also be booked online, so if calling is difficult, please consider booking via the web. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your understanding.

Onboard Facilities Services

Q.1 Do you have women-only rooms? View answer Close
We offer women-only cabins.

Q.2 Are barrier-free cabins available? View answer Close
We have wheelchair-accessible barrier-free cabins.

Each ship has a barrier-free cabin that can be used by wheelchair users. In principle, these cabins are reserved for passengers with disabilities and their companions, and aren’t available to the general public. We give priority to those who need them, so if you’d like a barrier-free cabin, please let us know when you book.

Q.3 Do you provide bedding and amenities? View answer Close
Bedding is provided for everyone, and Deluxe and 1st Class come with full amenities.

Bedding (mattress, pillow, blanket) is provided in all classes, so you don’t need to bring your own. Amenities like towels and toothbrushes vary by ferry company and class. Deluxe and 1st Class rooms include loungewear (yukata or samue), a toothbrush, soap, etc., in the room. 2nd Class rooms (including berths and Western-style rooms) generally don’t include amenities, so please bring your own toiletries and towels. Deluxe and 1st Class areas have dedicated shower rooms with shampoo and other toiletries provided.

Q.4 Are there restaurants or shops on board? View answer Close
All ships have restaurants and shops.

There is a restaurant (dining hall) and shop on board. Please check the posted notices on the ship for operating hours. The restaurant serves hot meals at dinner, breakfast, and lunch times. The shop sells light meals such as drinks, snacks, and cup noodles, as well as souvenirs and travel items. Daily necessities such as shampoo, soap, and towels are also available (however, stock is limited). Details vary depending on the ship you board, so please contact us for more information.

Q.5 Are there baths/showers? View answer Close
There are shower rooms, and some ships also have a large public bath.

Each ship has shower facilities. On Marix Line’s Queen Coral Plus, there’s a scenic-view bath (large public bath) you can use for free. Hours vary by ship, so check onboard. Shampoo, body soap, and towels aren’t provided, so bring your own.

Q.6 Can I smoke on board? View answer Close
All vessels have designated smoking rooms.

Smoking is only permitted in designated smoking areas (smoking rooms). All indoor areas including cabins and corridors are non-smoking, so please use the smoking rooms on board if you wish to smoke. Electronic cigarettes are also prohibited outside designated areas.

Q.7 Can I bring food and drinks? Can I use hot water? View answer Close
You can bring food and drinks, and hot water is available from dispensers.

You're welcome to bring your own food and drinks. You can enjoy packed lunches and snacks in public spaces or in the restaurant outside business hours. Hot water dispensers are available in the restaurant and other areas for your free use. Please use them for instant foods or preparing baby formula. Eating and drinking is not permitted in some cabins.

Q.8 Are there lockers on board? How do I store valuables? View answer Close
Some ferries are equipped with free coin lockers.
Some ferries also have free lockers for valuables, so please use those for small items. On the other hand, some ferries like the Akebono do not have coin lockers. In those cases, you'll need to keep your luggage nearby in the cabin and look after it yourself.
Q.9 Is Wi-Fi available? View answer Close
Free Wi-Fi is available in select areas.

Free wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) service is available onboard. You can connect near the special and first-class cabins and in the ship's entrance area (near the information desk). However, since this Wi-Fi relies on land-based signals, connectivity becomes unstable while sailing or offshore. It does not provide 100% constant internet access, and high-bandwidth activities (such as video streaming) may cause speed restrictions or disconnections, so please refrain from these. There may be times when connection is unavailable depending on signal conditions, so please enjoy your voyage with the mindset of "forgetting your phone and relaxing during the journey."

Q.10 子ども連れ向けの設備はありますか? View answer Close
キッズルーム・授乳室を完備しています。

小さなお子様連れの方も安心してご乗船いただけます。マリックスラインのクイーンコーラルクロスには キッズルーム があります。

Boarding Procedures

Q.1 How do I check in? View answer Close
Fill out the Boarding Application Form at the counter and proceed with your payment.

On the day of travel, go to the port terminal counter and fill out the Boarding Application Form with the required details (booking number, route, name, etc.), then submit it to purchase your ticket. You must submit this form even if you have a reservation or a voucher from a travel agency. After purchasing your ticket, follow the staff's instructions to board. No special documents are required, but you must present your vehicle registration if you are transporting a vehicle. In addition to cash, credit cards are accepted at each port counter.

Q.2 How many minutes before departure do I need to complete boarding procedures? View answer Close
Please complete check-in by 1 hour before departure.

Kagoshima - Amami Islands - Okinawa Route

Boarding procedures must be completed 1 hour before departure in principle (except for vehicles with drivers at Kagoshima Shinko), but please allow extra time. The counters at each port get crowded before departure, so we recommend arriving early. At Kagoshima Shinko, passenger check-in hours are normally 13:00–17:00. For vehicles with drivers, departures from Kagoshima require vehicle transport procedures to be completed 2–3 hours before departure depending on the destination (contact each company as guidance times vary). For departures from other ports, complete vehicle procedures by 1 hour before departure. Please note that if you miss the procedure deadline, you may not be able to board even with a reservation.

Kagoshima - Kikai - China Route

Boarding procedures must be completed 1 hour before departure in principle (except for vehicles with drivers at Kagoshima Shinko). The counters at each port get crowded before departure, so we recommend arriving early. Passengers must complete procedures at Kagoshima Main Port North Pier between 15:00–17:00 on the day of departure, and vehicles with drivers must complete vehicle transport procedures between 15:00–16:00. * However, if boarding for ports south of Naze, please complete procedures by 15:30. Please note that some agents at ports of call accept cash payment only.
Q.3 Can I purchase tickets in advance? View answer Close
Tickets are purchased at the counter on the day of departure.

Tickets are issued and purchased at the port counter on the day of departure. However, you can purchase boarding vouchers (coupons) in advance. You can buy boarding vouchers in advance from designated shipping agents or travel agencies affiliated with each company, and exchange them for tickets at the counter on the day of departure. Even if you have a boarding voucher purchased in advance, you'll still need to fill out and submit a boarding application form at the counter on the day of departure.

Q.4 Can I use a credit card? View answer Close
Credit cards are accepted at port counters.

Credit card payment is available at ticket counters at each port (applicable to passenger fares, vehicle transport fares, berth and class fees, fuel surcharges, pet room fees, etc.). Please note that some ports (agencies) may not accept credit cards, so please bring cash. Only cash is accepted onboard. Please bring sufficient cash for meals and shop purchases onboard.

Q.5 What do I need for the boarding procedure? View answer Close
You need a boarding application form and, if traveling with a vehicle, your vehicle inspection certificate.

For passengers only, no special documents are required. Simply fill out the boarding application form distributed at the counter on the day of departure. If traveling with a vehicle, you will need your vehicle inspection certificate (shaken). Use the information from the certificate to complete the vehicle transport application form and submit it at the counter.

Passengers requesting student discounts, disability discounts, or other discounts must present proof (such as a student ID) at the counter, so please prepare these documents in advance.

Even if you have made a reservation in advance, you will still need to fill out the application form and complete the counter procedure on the day of departure.

Timetable / Service Status

Q.1 When are cancellations or conditional operations decided? View answer Close
For southbound services (Kagoshima to Naha), decisions are made by the morning of the departure day. For northbound services (Naha to Kagoshima), decisions are made by the evening before departure.
The timing of cancellation decisions due to bad weather varies depending on the route direction. For southbound services (Kagoshima to Naha), the decision to operate is made by the morning of the departure day. For northbound services (Naha to Kagoshima), decisions are made by the evening before departure. Depending on sea conditions, the decision may be delayed, so please check the latest operational status on each company's website. Conditional operation decisions may also be made at the last minute. Customers with existing reservations will be notified by phone or other means as soon as conditional operations or cancellations are determined.
Q.2 What is conditional operation? View answer Close
It refers to sailings that might not be able to call at certain ports.

"Conditional operation" is a status announced in advance when weather or sea conditions might prevent the ship from docking at its intended port. In some cases, the ship may bypass the destination and proceed to the next port. If you disembark at an unplanned port, you'll be responsible for any resulting accommodation or transportation costs.

Q.3 What happens if it’s canceled due to a typhoon, etc.? View answer Close
Tickets can be refunded or moved to another date.

If a ferry is canceled due to a typhoon or severe weather, any tickets you’ve already purchased can be refunded or moved to another date. Once the cancellation is decided, each operator will contact you using the details you provided when booking. Reservations for canceled sailings will be treated as canceled, so please adjust your schedule and make a new booking. If you don’t board, there’s no refund fee and you’ll receive a full refund, so don’t worry.

Q.4 Where can I check if the arrival port changes? View answer Close
You will need to check with the local agent for any port changes.
The port of call (arrival port) may change suddenly due to weather or other conditions. Since port changes can be decided at the last minute, the most reliable way to get the final information is to contact the local port agent or terminal directly.
Q.5 Can I get off along the way? View answer Close
You need to buy a ticket for each segment.
At the moment, you can’t do a stopover—getting off at an island en route and boarding again on a later date—on a single ticket. If you’re visiting multiple islands, sorry for the hassle, but please buy a boarding ticket for each segment and make a separate reservation for each (e.g., book Kagoshima–Naze and Naze–Naha separately). Or you can use the 14-day unlimited island-hopping pass, the “Yui Passport” / “Yui Ticket.”
