How to board TUTORIAL

How to board

A guide to the boarding process for ferries connecting the Amami Islands. We will walk you through the steps from purchasing your ticket to boarding the ferry.

Ticket Reservation

Internet
Phone

You can reserve tickets online or by phone. Passengers and vehicles: reservations generally open one month before the sailing date. Vehicle reservations are mandatory and require vehicle type and length. For departures from Kagoshima, complete shipping procedures 2–3 hours before sailing; at other ports, one hour before. In peak season, book early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I board on the same day without a reservation? Same-day boarding is possible if seats are available; however, during peak seasons ships tend to fill up quickly, so advance reservations are recommended.
When can I make a reservation? In principle, reservations for both passengers and vehicles open on the same calendar day one month prior to the boarding date.
What should I do when bringing a vehicle on board? Vehicle reservations are mandatory. For departures from Kagoshima, check-in procedures must be completed 2–3 hours prior to departure; at other ports, procedures must be completed at least 1 hour before departure.
When is it best to make a reservation? During peak seasons, sailings often sell out, so booking early—such as right after reservations open—is recommended.

For Pregnant or Recuperating Passengers

Passengers who are pregnant or undergoing treatment due to illness or injury must inform the reservation center when booking and notify the counter staff at the time of boarding procedures.

Depending on the weather conditions (meteorological and sea conditions) on the day of boarding or your physical condition, you may not be permitted to board.

There are no doctors, nurses, or medical facilities on board. Depending on the route, it may take a long time to reach the next port of call, and disembarkation will not be possible due to illness or other reasons. Please be advised in advance.

Pregnant passengers are required to complete a consent form at the ticket counter during boarding procedures. Please inform the staff at the counter.

Passengers undergoing medical treatment may be required to submit a medical certificate from a physician and/or be accompanied by a caregiver. If boarding with a care vehicle or stretcher, please contact the reservation center in advance.

In accordance with the Conditions of Carriage, passengers with infectious diseases or suspected infectious diseases may be denied boarding. Thank you for your understanding.

For Passengers with Disabilities

Boarding and Disembarking Assistance

We provide vehicle-assisted boarding/disembarkation (waiting area ⇔ ship) for guests with limited mobility. (Not available at Kagoshima Shin Port Terminal and Naze Port, which have boarding bridges.)

Please understand the following and book in advance.
・Capacity is limited; do not use this service only because you have a lot of luggage.
・If many guests need assistance, companions may not ride in the assistance vehicle (unless our staff deem a companion necessary).
・Complete procedures at least 1 hour before departure (last-minute requests may not be possible).

Advance Reservation

If you need boarding or disembarkation assistance, request it when you call the reservation center.

Mirairo ID

A-Line Ferry and Marix Line have introduced the disability certificate app “Mirairo ID.”

For Passengers Using Wheelchairs

Boarding and disembarking assistance is provided using a welfare vehicle (ramp-equipped type).

A-Line Ferry and Marix Line have introduced ramp-equipped welfare vehicles that allow passengers to board and disembark while remaining in their wheelchairs. This service is available on the Kagoshima – Amami Islands – Okinawa route. We hope this will help make your voyage more comfortable.

A-Line Ferry
Marix Line
Amami Shipping does not provide welfare vehicle services.

Boarding Reservations (Advance Reservations by Phone and Counter Reservations)

  • We confirm manual vs. power wheelchair, dimensions, and whether a companion travels with you.
  • This route involves long sailing times; we recommend traveling with a companion for safety and comfort.
  • Assistance vehicles for wheelchair boarding/disembarkation are available; tell us if you arranged your own care taxi.
  • Vehicle specifications are limited—confirm your wheelchair size in advance; if unsuitable, arrange a welfare taxi.
  • If using a care taxi or assistance vehicle, complete procedures by 1 hour before departure and wait to board.
  • Cargo operations may extend boarding/disembarkation times.

Regarding Boarding Procedures (Ticket Counter)

Passengers boarding with “boarding/disembarking assistance” or a “care taxi” are requested to inform the ticket counter.

During Boarding Assistance We will escort you to the boarding/disembarking assistance vehicle at the designated vehicle stop in the passenger waiting area. After arriving at the vehicle boarding area inside the ship, we will guide you to the ship’s information desk by elevator.

During Disembarking Assistance We will meet you at the ship’s information desk and escort you by elevator to the vehicle boarding area inside the ship. After boarding the assistance vehicle, we will take you to the designated vehicle stop at the passenger waiting area.
